The ICWA Subcommittee focuses on how the legal process impacts Alaska Native children and their families and seeks improved outcomes in CINA-ICWA cases generally. Thus the committee undertakes innovations and projects designed to increase the amount and quality of Tribal participation in CINA cases, to improve the handling of CINA cases generally, and to address unique problems in rural areas involving Native families and the child in need of aid legal process. The committee also analyzes ways in which the projects or initiatives of the Court Improvement Committee can be adapted or tailored to address unique issues for Alaska Native families, advising the Court Improvement Project (CIP) on all aspects of the CIP work. The committee initiates its own project with CIP approval, and also takes projects on referral from the CIP. The committee chair is the liaison between the ICWA Subcommittee and the CIP.
